About Aetna Health Insurance

Aetna, a CVS Health company and one of the leading health insurance companies in the United States, is trusted by an estimated 39 million individuals to assist in making healthcare and expenditure decisions.6

With mental and behavioral health services included in its coverage, Aetna offers a variety of plans, including Health Maintenance Organization (HMO), Preferred Provider Organization (PPO), and Medicare coverage.

  • HMO: Aetna offers two different HMO plans:7
    • Aetna HMO: You must select a primary care physician (PCP) to oversee your treatment and coordinate specialty care.
    • Aetna Health Network Only: You won’t have to choose between saving money and having more options. The cost savings of a network-only plan and the freedom of not having to deal with referrals or a PCP are part of this plan.
  • PPO:8 You’ll never have to pick between savings and flexibility. With four different PPO plans to choose from, you receive everything, including no referral fees, large networks, and competitive prices.
    • Aetna Open Choice PPO: You can go to any provider, in or out of network, without needing a referral. If you stay in-network, Aetna manages the claims and offers cheaper, contracted prices.
    • Aetna Open Choice POS II: You don’t need referrals to see any doctor, hospital, or facility in or out of network. However, choosing a primary care physician (PCP) and staying in-network may cost less depending on your plan.
    • Aetna Managed Choice: You receive all of the economic benefits of a managed care plan without giving up your independence. You’ll choose from Aetna in network mental health providers to oversee your care. You may also choose to go out of network, which renders you responsible or liable for the higher cost.
    • Aetna Open Access Managed Choice: The Aetna Open Access® Managed Choice® plan removes some of the “managed” from managed care while retaining the savings. In addition, you have the option of visiting any provider.
  • Indemnity Plan:9 Because there is no network, Aetna’s Traditional Choice® indemnity plan removes the limits of being in-network. There is no need for referrals.
  • Medicare:10 a health insurance program for adults over 65 and those receiving Social Security disability benefits. There are HMO and PPO plans to choose from, but PPO plans allow you to see any Medicare-accepting provider. Keep in mind that using Aetna in-network mental health providers may be less expensive.

Does Aetna Insurance Cover Online Therapy?

Yes, Aetna mental health coverage includes access to online therapy.11 Aetna mental health providers are available 24/7/365. Your coverage is dependent upon your plan type.

How Much Do Mental Health Services & Testing Cost?

Costs can vary depending on your specific Cigna mental health coverage and personalized treatment needs. The following are average costs for therapy, though they may vary by location and other variables and may not reflect the actual cost of treatment or what you may actually pay.

For example, In the United States, the typical cost of psychotherapy ranges from $100 to $20012 a session, dependent upon the state and the length of the session. With health insurance, you’ll most likely have a co-pay that can range from a few dollars to $50 or more a session.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) sessions are typically 45+ minutes long and cost between $100 and $200 per session, while Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) usually consists of a weekly individual therapy session, a weekly group therapy session, and weekly phone conversations. DBT costs vary depending on the type of services rendered.

Such factors, like whether the therapist is in-network or out of network, can influence this out-of-pocket cost.

Even with insurance, you will normally have to pay some or all of your medical expenditures until your total medical expenses for the year reach the deductible. Depending on your plan, you may be required to pay a co-pay or coinsurance for each treatment.

Some therapists will work with patients on a sliding scale for those who do not present insurance. If you find a therapist who offers a sliding scale payment plan, they will most likely base the cost of your sessions on your income. This sliding scale can also vary from therapist to therapist.
